Toni Nadal, uncle and successful coach of the 14-time Grand Slam tournament winner Rafael Nadal, hinted at a press conference during the Mercedes Cup on Friday that there is a chance his nephew could be seen at next year's first grass tournament at the Stuttgart Weissenhof.
"In order to optimally prepare for Wimbledon, you need conditions similar to Wimbledon. And the courts here in Stuttgart are very similar to the courts at Wimbledon. I'll tell Rafael how well the conditions of the lawn in Weissenhof are," said Toni Nadal.
Tournament director Edwin Weindorfer took the message with joy, but cautioned: "It is of course a good sign when a Toni shows interest in having Rafael Nadal participate in the Mercedes Cup. But apart from the sporting aspects, the economic concerns are taken into account which are the concerns of manager of Carlos Costa," says Weindorfer. It will be interesting to see whether the current world ranking Number 2 from Spain will indeed play for the first grass court trophy at the Mercedes Cup next year after his victories in 2005 and 2007 when the venue had clay courts.
