2015 Barcelona Open R3 Rafael Nadal vs. Fabio Fognini 4/6 6/7
“It’s a disaster,” said a defeated Nadal in the post-match press conference. “My game was mundane. I didn’t have enough power, speed and control in my forehand. I didn’t manage to push Fognini back.”
“Fabio played better and he deserved to win. I did not deserve to win. I have to accept it or die,” added Nadal. “That’s why I will accept the upcoming challenges. I will work hard until I get back to my best. But it will be a while.”
Nadal, who lost to Fognini for the second time this season after the semi-finals in Rio de Janeiro, did not blame anxiety for his loss: “It is a technical problem, not a matter of anxiety.”
“It’s a very sad day for me. This tournament means a lot to me, it’s one of the best ATP 500 events on the tour and I feel at home,” said Nadal, who will travel home to Mallorca today. “I hope all the ups and downs will eventually come to an end and that I’ll be able to keep up with a good level. Sadly I wasn’t able to do so today…”
