“Today I think I played a solid match against a tough opponent like Simon that is not easy tactically,” Nadal said. “In general, I played solid. Only two bad games with my serve I played bad.

“Happy with the way I played.  It was an important victory for me, for sure.”

Nadal said he’s been feeling better with his game after the South American leg of the season, where he reached the semifinals in Rio de Janeiro and won Buenos Aires.

And to beat Simon is always a good victory.

“He's a player that is tough, because sometimes you feel that you have the match under control, but he's able to be back,” Nadal said. “He's able to play very well in defending positions.  And then from a defending position, he's able to come back and have the control of the point.

“He's not an easy opponent. He's a tough one. He started the season well. It’s a good victory for me.”

Raonic’s big serve, even though he’s won all five of their previous meetings.  

“Obviously he's an opponent that you don't want to play against because he's an opponent that you play under a lot of pressure (for) everything, every point,” Nadal said.  “Every point has a lot of value. You cannot lose your concentration for one moment with your serve.

“I know I need to be at 100 percent to have any chance, and that I’m going to try.”

Он не простой противник. Это хорошая победа для меня ".

"Очевидно, что Раонич - противник, против которого играть не хочется, из-за его подачи, потому что вы играете под большим давлением всё время, каждый розыгрыш", сказал Надаль. "Розыгрыш каждого очка имеет большую ценность. Вы не можете потерять концентрацию ни на один момент на вашей подаче.
Я знаю, что нужно играть на 100 процентов, чтобы иметь шанс, и  я собираюсь попробовать сделать это."
