Rafael Nadal made history once again on Friday at the Qatar ExxonMobil Open – this time on the doubles court.
Nadal claimed a record fourth Doha doubles crown, teaming with good friend Juan Monaco for a 6-3, 6-4 victory over the Austrian tandem of Julian Knowle and Philipp Oswald.
The 28 year old joined forces with countryman Marc Lopez to triumph in 2009 and '11, as well as with Albert Costa in '05. He captured his ninth doubles title overall on the ATP World Tour and first with Monaco. The Spanish-Argentine duo, who previously reached the final in Vina del Mar in 2013 (l. to Lorenzi/Starace), earned $62,430 in prize money and 250 Emirates ATP Rankings points.
Nadal is one of three players to win both singles and doubles titles in Doha, joining Stefan Edberg and Boris Becker. He won his lone singles title last year. Monaco, meanwhile, won his third tour-level doubles crown and first in seven years, having previously hoisted the trophies in Auckland (w/Gonzalez) and Valencia (w/Horna) in 2008.
Knowle and Oswald, boasting a combined 20 ATP World Tour doubles titles, were contesting their first final together.
Rafa Nadal: "It's a great feeling to come back to the competition and have the feeling of winning a title. It's positive for me, a good way to finish the week. I'm practising very hard and I'll be practising tomorrow. I'm very motivated to be back at my best in singles too."
”It's a very good start to the season," said Knowle. "It's great for me to play against Rafa, the icon of our sport. I admire him so much. It was an honour to compete against him."
