Nadal’s reason for withdrawing from the Paris Masters, held at the Palais Omnisport in Bercy, is given as ‘personal reasons’ but it is reasonable to assume it has something to do with the health problems he has been suffering of late.
The French Open champion was diagnosed with appendicitis shortly before the Shanghai Rolex Masters and opted to postpone surgery to remove the troubled organ, having aggressive antibiotic treatment instead. He lost to Feliciano Lopez in Shanghai and rested for a week before playing the Swiss Indoors Basel, where he has reached the quarterfinals with two dominant wins over qualifiers Simone Bolelli and Pierre-Hugues Herbert.
Nadal faces wildcard Borna Coric in the Basel quarterfinals on Friday but has announced his withdrawal from the BNP Paribas Masters, which he has never won – his best result at the indoors event came back in 2007 when he reached the final, losing to David Nalbandian.
Nadal’s participation at the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals, another tournament he has never won – Nadal lost to Roger Federer in the final in 2010 and Novak Djokovic in the final in 2013 – must also be in doubt although organizers will hope against hope that he continues to postpone surgery.
