The event, called Rafa’s Summer Set, will christen the redeveloped Margaret Court Arena at Melbourne Park, home of the Australian Open. The Margaret Court Arena (MCA), named in 2003 for 24-time Grand Slam champion Margaret Court who won the Australian Open 11 times, has been expanded to seat 7,500 people and now features a retractable roof which takes just five minutes to open or close – the fastest of its kind in the world.
On Wednesday 14 January, the week before the 2015 Australian Open begins on Monday 19 January, Nadal will star at the event which will raise funds for the Australian Tennis Foundation and the Rafa Nadal Foundation, which aims to provide opportunities for socially disadvantaged young people.
Nadal will face three other players in one-set exhibitions. Compatriot Fernando Verdasco, currently ranked 33 in the world, will take on Nadal in a re-match of their 2009 Australian Open five-set semifinal, generally considered to be one of the best men’s matches at the first Grand Slam of the year in the past decade.
Nadal will also face a pair of Australian stars. Mark Philippoussis, a two-time Grand Slam finalist at the 1998 US Open and Wimbledon 2003, has been confirmed for the event. Philippoussis retired due to persistent knee injuries but performed very well in the recent International Premier Tennis League (IPTL): Subbed in for the injured Carlos Moya on the Manila Mavericks team, Philippoussis lost just one set throughout the four legs of the IPTL which he played and looked in excellent form.
‘I’m very excited to be playing Rafa, I consider him one of the best players of all time and probably the best competitor that’s ever stepped on the court. I can’t wait,’ Philippoussis said.
‘The whole event sounds pretty cool, a different kind of tennis event. There’ll be lights and music, it’s going to be a great show and I’m looking forward to being part of it.’
17-year-old Australian Omar Jasika will also be taking on Nadal at the exhibition event. Jasika won singles and doubles at the US Open junior event in 2014 and is currently ranked world no. 555

‘I’ve heard that the new roof on Margaret Court Arena is now finished and the pictures I’ve seen are amazing. The Australian fans are always fantastic and I hope they’ll come and experience the finished stadium at this special event,’ Nadal said.
Nadal won the Australian Open in 2009 and has returned to the final twice since then, losing to Novak Djokovic in 2012 and Stan Wawrinka in 2014.
