Eight-time Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell champion Rafael Nadal defeated Germany’s Philipp Kohlschreiber 6-3, 6-3 on a packed Pista Central to set a blockbuster final against reigning champion Kei Nishikori.

Nadal, who has not lost a set on the road to the final, broke Kohlschreiber three times and saved the only break point he faced throughout the match in the second set. “It was not my best match this week, I hit many unforced errors with my backhand today,” said Nadal after the match.

In Sunday’s final, Nadal will face Nishikori in the Catalan capital for the first time. The Japanese World No. 6 knocked out Frenchman Benoit Paire in straight sets earlier today.

“I will play against one of the world’s best players tomorrow and the match will be complicated,” said Nadal. “I have to play a great match to win the final.”

Nadal aims to clinch his record ninth title at the Real Club Tenis Barcelona-1899 tomorrow, seeking to halt Nishikori’s successful 14-0 run in the Catalan capital. The Asian No. 1 seeks to become the third player in history to lift the Conde de Godo Trophy three consecutive times. Only Sweden’s Mats Wilander and Nadal have achieved this feat in the past.

Nadal, who leads Nishikori with 8-1 in the head-to-head, dominated tomorrow’s rival in their last meeting at Indian Wells, beating the Japanese star in straight sets. Nishikori’s only victory against Rafa came last year at the Rogers Cup in Toronto.

Translated by Genny SS:

Rafa's said today's been a match with little rhythm. He didn't feel as comfy with his BH as other days (it was a bit windy)
He's very happy with the win & reaching another Final. He knows he has to play really well to have chances vs Kei, one of best players in world.
Rafa's gonna try his best to be ready & win tomorrow... though it won't be easy, as Kei's playing really well.
Rafa's praised Kohls as a complete player with all the shots, but said his game matches him well. Kohls OHBH is very good, but it's OHBH after all.
